Television, It's Personal
Television is much more than entertainment – it's a mirror placed in front of society, revealing its dynamics, gaps, prejudices – and also its most surprising moments of connection. As an experienced and respected director in the Israeli television industry, Halit believes that the personal is political and that every narrative choice is also a social choice.
A journey behind the scenes of well-known and beloved programs – "Come Dine With Me," "Survivor," "The Politics of Food" – how shaping a story through editing and directing not only dictates drama and entertainment but also serves as a tool for a deep understanding of the society we live in.
How do you choose participants who will light up the screen? How do you deal with charged moments when stereotypes, LGBTQphobia, and prejudices are exposed on camera? How can commercial television, which naturally aims for ratings, also – and perhaps must – create meaningful social discourse?
The engagement with personal images and narratives doesn't remain only on screen. In her documentary film, "Fat" (2017), Halit embarked on an exposing journey in which she confronted her body image and a society that sanctifies an unattainable beauty ideal. The film, which was screened at international festivals, creates a topic of conversation about self-acceptance in general.
Between reality and reality TV. Let's break down together how the stories we consume on screen shape us, and how we can use the cultural space to tell a better story – to ourselves and society as a whole.
